<p>The majority of calcium in your body is present in your teeth and bones.  It&#8217;s necessary for skeletal and dental health, and one of the major factors in the durability of your teeth and bones.  Also, your bones store calcium for use by other organs and systems.  Neurological health depends upon sufficient calcium, as does the heart, which relies on calcium to maintain a strong and regular heartbeat. </p>
<p>Calcium deficiency is the root cause of many dangerous conditions.  Osteoporosis is one of these, affecting large numbers of women, in particular.  And because circulatory health is heavily dependent on calcium, deficiency can result in poor blood clotting.  Low levels of calcium also contribute to rickets. </p>
<p>Calcium is replenished by consuming foods and beverages that contain the essential mineral.  Dairy products are one well-known source of calcium.  However, calcium absorption depends on more than the level of the mineral in a given food.  The body must have adequate amounts of the vitamin D accessible to properly absorb calcium from food. </p>
<p>Calcium deficiency is prevented and treated by dietary vigilance, and if necessary, supplementation. </p>
