Your decision to stay close to home during your vacation may be due to financial concerns, less time to travel, or an obligation in the area, but staying nearby doesn’t have to mean missing out on a great vacation.
In fact, many of us have overlooked the opportunities for recreation close to home–you may see and do as many or more novel, fun things than you would farther away.
Even if you think you know everything about your local area, take a trip to a visitor’s center, or visit the tourism websites of your home region. Consider what your area is known for–does it have a unique history, or cultural mix? Does it boast agricultural production or performance arts?
Seek out organizations that provide recreation or educational opportunities. There may be a local African dance group that holds Saturday rehearsals, or an organic farm that offers tours and classes. State botanical gardens and arboretums, or museums, are another good choice. Even your town’s library may host events.
And while you may not be able to travel far, don’t discount the possibility of staying at a resort, or a bed and breakfast. It may seem strange at first to stay in lodging so close to your own home, but choosing a cozy B&B or a luxurious hotel suite will reaffirm, psychologically, that you’re taking a break from the everyday.
